1984’s Number Two Hits And Their Nemeses

Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s Two Tribes enjoyed a nine-week run at number 1 in the summer of 1984. So, it’s perhaps a surprise that only two tracks were stopped from getting no further than number 2. However, given that their own song, Relax, climbed back up to number 2 during those nine weeks, the sense of surprise is lessened. Of course, Relax had enjoyed its own stay at number 1 in the Spring.

In December, Last Christmas by Wham! was prevented from reaching number 1 by Band Aid. No shame in that.
